Plutei with emblems

The three slabs are an integral part of the original decoration of St. Sebastian once placed in the upper pronaos and now replaced by copies for conservation purposes. The front of the two side plutei depicts the Gonzaga emblem of the rayed sun inscribed in a garland of oak leaves, supported by winged putti around which there is a ribbon bearing the inscription ‘PAR UN DESIR’. The emblem refers directly to Marquis Ludovico II Gonzaga, who commissioned the building on 5 June 1412, “dies solis”.

The back shows a decorated vase from which two large acanthus volutes branch off, ending in a floral motif.
